Tips on picking the best women's western shirt for your frame from an online western wear catalog.

You love the style, sophistication, and romance of the Old West, so you've decided to buy a women's western shirt.  Now if only someone could guarantee that you'd look as lovely as the model in the western wear online catalog.  While we can't make a 100 percent guarantee, we can suggest two methods that will increase your success in finding the right western shirt for your frame.

Method One:  Measure an existing shirt that fits you well

Many western wear catalogs recommend the "measure the body" approach (method #2 below), but as you probably know, this is harder than it seems.  This is why we recommend this first method--it's easier!

Step 1:  Lay the buttoned shirt flat on a flat surface.  Measure across the chest, one inch below the armhole. Double the measurement to account for both the front and back.

Step 2:  If you like a close fit, subtract four inches from the shirt measurement. This is your chest size.

Step 3:  Find the closest measurement in the chest sizes chart found on each page of the women's western shirts.

Method Two:  Estimate from actual chest measurement

Accurate measurements do remove the guesswork--and the likelihood of having to return something that doesn't fit.  If you're comfortable using a tape measure--or having someone measure you--go with this method.

Step 1:  If you don't already know your chest measurement, measure the fullest part of your chest, typically one inch below the arm.

Step 2:  Find the closest measurement on the sizing chart found on each western shirt page.  If you want extra room and a relaxed fit, buy up a size.  Remember, you can always have a shirt tailored if you want it to be snug, but a shirt can’t be let out more than the amount of fabric that's in the final product.

General Tips:

Keep in mind that women's western shirts are conventionally form-fit. While ladies' western shirts are sized for women, they tend to be driven by  men's western shirts styles.  Our shirts generally result in a "true" fit for the body measurements listed.  Our interest lies in helping you remain free and comfortable as you pursue your favorite outdoor activities.  If you're "in between" categories, we recommend that you lean toward the next larger size category. Another thing to keep in mind: most of the women's western shirts are 100% cotton, so there may be some shrinking after washing. Don't forget they snap, too, so you'll want to leave extra room through the bust line.

Set yourself apart with these distinct styles of women's western shirts: vintage western blouses, chic/contemporary western shirts, and show/retro western shirts.

Do clothes make the cowgirl or does the cowgirl make the clothes? It's probably a combination of both--cowgirls come to the ranch with their own sense of style already in hand. The clothes they choose reflect their personalities. And while every cowgirl is unique in her own special way, most personalities fall in line with one of the styles of women's western shirts that we're highlighting below. We're sure you'll find one that'll go along with your cowgirl mojo.

Vintage Western Blouses

Cowgirls who choose this look love the ruffles, lace, and romance of the Old West. They tend to be fun, flirty, and whimsical and choose one-of-a-king accessories that match their playful, yet romantic, style aesthetic. These vintage western blouses look great with suede riding skirts or long skirts. They're also feminine and dressy enough for a great night out or a wedding.

Chic, Contemporary Women's Western Shirts

These western shirts are for today's cowgirls, which is why their shirts adopt mainstream fashion elements. Chic women's western shirts look great worn alone or layered with a simple cami and worn partially or the whole way open. From simple, soft prints to plaids to "plain"--these western shirts favor clean designs and meticulous tailoring. Simple embroidery transcends what might be considered a "classic" look to a contemporary style. These shirts are perfect for women who like a sharp sophisticated look that can be worn every day.

Retro Western Shirts

Retro cowgirls love to show off that western flair: reflections of the Old West with stunning embroidered designs on the front and back yoke and accented with rhinestones. Women's retro western shirts are well made with top-of-the-line fabrics like rayon gabardine. Think "haute couture" of western shirts or costumes. These shirts derive from early western shirts, which were intended to be a departure from conventional fashion. The whole point is to "stand out," which is why the brighter the embroidery and rhinestone, the better. Catch the eyes of the show judges or parade goers with rhinestones glittering in the sunlight. Accessorize with crystal rhinestone belts, and we can almost guarantee you'll capture everyone's attention. These shirts are great for cowgirls who enjoy square dancing, line dancing, or going to the rodeo. Also perfect for western-themed weddings.

How to Wear Women's Western Shirts

Whether you want a casual or formal look, your women's western shirts will deliver. It all depends on how you wear them. Here are some tips for accomplishing just the right look with your cowgirl shirts.

Women's Western Shirts

Fun & Flirty Look: Untucked & Unbuttoned Women's Western Shirts

Untucked western shirts do not have to give the appearance of an unprofessional or sloppy look. Wear your women's western shirt untucked and open to reveal a solid camisole beneath it--talk about romantic! Or simply leave a few of the top buttons undone and show off some cool western jewelry. Or keep some of the lower buttons open (like in this BONES skeleton western shirt) and show off a tight tummy.

Classic Look: Tucked In Western Shirts

Tucked in shirts are perfect if you're going for the classic cowgirl look. Button them all the way down (with a few left open at the top) and tuck them in evenly in your favorite denims, shorts, skirts, or jeans. Tucked-in shirts can also be worn with a solid camisole. Tuck the shirt in and button halfway up to reveal the camisole. And don't forget your rhinestone belt to keep your denims up and your western shirt tucked in!

How to Wear Rhinestone Belts with Your Western Shirts

While you usually wear your rhinestone belts with tucked in western shirts, you can also wear them without belt loops: casually buckle your rhinestone belt around a buttoned western shirt. To achieve the correct fit on the belt, make sure you buckle it a bit more loosely than you would if you had hooked it through belt loops--this way it will hang on your hips. Talk about sexy!
