Caring For Leather

Leather is a popular fabric in western wear. It is used for western vests, duster coats, cowboy boots, leather purses, wallets, cell phone cases, and horse saddles! Leather is very useful for durability, style, comfort, and warmth--if taken care of properly. Knowing how to properly care for your leather is important if you want to get a long life out of your leather goods. Here are some tips for doing just that.

Taking a Proactive Approach to Leather Care

Unfortunately, accidents do happen. Be prepared for the occasional spill or stain by applying a water and stain protector, which can help reduce stain damage. Make sure you read the directions on the water and stain protector so that you apply it properly.

Cleaning Your Leather

Cleaning your leather can help preserve its life. If your leather gets dirty from the elements, you can lightly clean it with a sponge, soap, and water. After cleaning, let the leather air dry or assist in the drying process by dabbing it with a soft towel to absorb the liquid. Never blow dry or apply heat to dry leather because this could cause cracking or damage. After cleaning (and before storing), condition it with mink oil or a leather conditioner (use a soft cloth). This will help prevent cracking as well.

Storing Your Leather

Storing your leather correctly when you're not wearing it also important. During long periods of storage, leather goods should hang to prevent wrinkling, and you should store them in garment bags that can breathe. Avoid plastic dry cleaning bags because they do not allow the leather to breathe. Temperature is important when storing leather goods. If the storage area suffers from high humidity (moist, hot, sticky air), make sure you condition your leather and store it in an area that has cooler drier air. But keep this in mind: if you live in a very dry area, this extreme can cause the leather to crack, so it's important to condition the leather for flexibility when storing.
